Transportation Improvement Program

The Transportation Improvement Program is a four-year schedule of all federally-funded and regionally-significant transportation projects to be implemented in the RVTPO region.  It functions like a budget and projects can only be funded if they are consistent with the goals of the Long-Range Transportation Plan.  The Transportation Improvement Program is updated every three years with amendments as needed in the years between. The current Transportation Improvement Program is for fiscal years 2018 – 2021.

Long-Range Plan

The Long-Range Plan guides the Roanoke Valley in creating a more efficient, responsive and environmentally-sensitive transportation system over the next 20+ years.  The plan examines transportation trends/issues and offers a list of specific projects for addressing the Roanoke Valley’s mobility needs.  It is updated every five years with amendments as needed in the years between.

The Long-Range Plan contains a list of projects that the RVTPO reasonably expects to be able to fund over the next 20 years, called the Financially Constrained List of Projects. It also includes a Vision List of Projects that the RVTPO would like to carry out should funding become available. Federal transportation funding programs require federally funded projects to be on the financially constrained list of projects. When needs or funding opportunities arise that weren’t planned for, or the timing or cost changes, the projects on the financially constrained list may need to change.

Details about projects proposed to be added, removed, or modified on the constrained & vision lists are available at this link.
