Director of Transportation
The Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission is seeking an energetic, creative, and outcome-focused individual to lead our Transportation team. The Director of Transportation oversees the bulk of our transportation planning, programming, and implementation work and will manage stakeholder relationships among our localities and across state and federal partners. The Director of Transportation has significant responsibility managing our urban transportation program and its various Federal regulatory requirements, along with our rural transportation planning efforts and support with various local and regional planning efforts along with ongoing technical support.
The Director of Transportation is ultimately responsible for working with member localities to identify their needs, align regional priorities accordingly, and seek paths to implementation through various state and federal programs like SMART SCALE, RAISE, Safe Streets 4 All, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, and other opportunities as they arise.

Transportation Planner (II-III Per Experience)
The Transportation Planner is responsible for performing transportation-related professional and technical work independently and in teams. Such work may include preparing and developing regional plans and technical reports, analyzing and interpreting transportation information, presenting information to stakeholders, creating maps, conducting field work, maintaining databases, and representing the Commission to local or state organizations. Additionally, maintaining current knowledge on federal and state transportation legislation, the latest technical transportation analysis methods, and software skills such as those related to virtual platforms, Microsoft Office and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Internship and Volunteer Program
Internship and volunteer opportunities are available year-round with the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission’s Internship and Volunteer Program for students and individuals that have coursework, interest and/or experience in any of the following areas: regional and transportation planning, community and economic development, water and environmental resources planning, demographics, mapping, housing, homelessness, citizen participation and outreach, general research and data collection, website design, graphic design, and/or related topics.
Types of Internships and Volunteer Opportunities
Academic and special project (thesis, research, capstone project, etc.) internships and volunteer opportunities are available for students from a range of academic majors and/or skill sets. Note: Academic credit internships are based on academic institution and/or department requirements and the intern is responsible for completing all requisite administrative items.
Internship and/or Volunteer Projects and Duties
Specific duties and assignments will be based on intern’s/individual’s area(s) of interest/expertise and the Regional Commission’s Work Program. An overview of programs, projects, and activities is in the Regional Commission’s Comprehensive Work Program.
Work Hours and Office Location
Work hours are flexible and based on the intern’s or volunteer’s schedule, academic institution requirements for academic or other credit, and the timetable of various projects in which the intern or volunteer will be participating. Regional Commission office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Regional Commission is located at 313 Luck Avenue, SW, Roanoke VA 24016. Directions and parking information.
