The Regional Bicycle Advisory Committee (Regional BAC) is a standing committee organized and hosted by the Roanoke Valley Alleghany Regional Commission. The Regional BAC was established in 2008 following a recommendation from a Bicycle Friendly Community workshop hosted by the League of American Bicyclist (LAB). The Regional BAC is composed of appointed representatives from local government (cities of Roanoke and Salem, the counties of Botetourt and Roanoke, and the Town of Vinton); the Regional Commission; Roanoke Valley Area MPO, VDOT, Roanoke Valley greenway Commission, RIDE Solutions, Roanoke Regional Partnership, Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, area bike shops, and citizen advocates. Currently, the Regional BAC meets bi-monthly (third Wednesday of the month at 8:30 am at the Regional Commission) and serves a forum for discussion of bicycle-related topics and to facilitate the provision and promotion of bicycle accommodations, information, and resources in the greater Roanoke area. More specifically, the RBAC informs and/or forwards relevant topics and information to the Roanoke Valley Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (RVAMPO) Transportation Technical Committee (TTC) and Policy Board for discussion or action; assists in updating and implementing the Bikeway Plan for the RVAMPO; assists in the annual National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation (NBPD) project; participates in periodic Planners and Engineers Rides; assists the annual Regional Bike Awards program (Bike Hero and Extraordinary Bicycle Professional); and conducts other activities as requested or relevant.
